The formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the noncentral collision of two Reissner-Nordstr\"om gravitational shock waves in AdS is studied numerically for various spacetime dimensions (D=4, 5, 6, and 7). These waves are obtained as the infinite boost limit of charged black holes solutions in AdS. In all cases, the trapped surface only forms when the impact parameter is below a certain critical value. The charge tends to prevent the formation of the trapped surface by decreasing the size of the critical impact parameter, its effect dominating at low energies. At high energies, the effect of the charge is negligible and the results for the collision of two Aichelburg-Sexl-AdS shock waves are recovered. The numerical results show that the critical energy and the critical impact parameter follow simple scaling laws. Finally, noncentral collisions of Reissner-Nordstr\"om shock waves in four- and five-dimensional flat spacetime are also studied.
